Studio Blue Design Thinking Intern

Eaton’s Studio Blue (Human-Centered Design Center of Excellence) is currently seeking a Design Thinking intern to join our team for the Summer 2024 semester (May – August 2024). This position is based at our Moon Township, PA location (Pittsburgh area).

In this role, you will help fulfill our mission of empowering people to be more human-centered, collaborative, and creative by building design thinking capabilities and supporting communities of practice across the enterprise. You will provide input and support the development and deployment of design thinking education at Eaton, including training, coaching, resources, and community. You will be exposed to day-to-day business functions and can grow your knowledge of design thinking, product development, user research, and design language.

About Studio Blue

Our team, Studio Blue, is responsible for growing the practice of Human-Centered Design at Eaton. We function as an internal design consultancy, collaborating with Eaton teams around the world. Through our expertise in design thinking, industrial design, and digital user experience design we are working to make Eaton a more design-minded company.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will help fulfill our mission of empowering people to be more human-centered, collaborative, and creative by building design thinking capabilities and supporting communities of practice across the enterprise. You will provide input and support the development and deployment of design thinking education at Eaton, including training, coaching, resources, and community. You will be exposed to day-to-day business functions and can grow your knowledge of design thinking, product development, user research, and design language.

Essential Functions

  • Listen to strategy conversations and provide input to problem solving and decision making.
  • Support the delivery of existing training courses and help develop new training materials.
  • Get involved in planning workshop agendas and building facilitation materials. Participate in workshops, closely observe what's happening, and assist the facilitator.
  • Synthesize insights from workshops and research activities to create strategic deliverables for internal partners.
  • Support industrial and user experience designers in crafting and facilitating world-class design thinking exercises and workshops across multiple product development efforts with Eaton businesses around the world.
  • Contribute to the development of self-learning resources that can be used by design thinking facilitators and practitioners.
  • Participate in internal community-building activities with designers and non-designers to share and build knowledge.
  • Take guidance from team members and add your own thinking to your assignments, while also managing multiple tasks and prioritizing how you spend your time.
  • Engage in ongoing dialogue with your manager and senior team members to give and receive constructive feedback that will drive your performance and growth.


Qualifications

  • You have completed at least 2 years of an undergraduate degree seeking program such as industrial design, human computer interaction (HCI), communication design, graphic design, experience design, product management, or user research.
  • You have a foundation in human-centered design, design thinking principles, and a portfolio or presentation that demonstrates knowledge of experience design, industrial design, product design, communication design, and/or user research.
  • You are located or willing to relocate (assistance available) to the Pittsburgh, PA area for the duration of the internship experience.
  • You have access to transportation to our Cherrington, Moon Township office.
  • You must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.

  • You can handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, providing deliverables through completion and on time.
  • You have basic proficiency in Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is preferred. Experience with digital whiteboards and remote collaboration is a plus.

Working with Studio Blue

Most of our Studio Blue Americas team is based in Pittsburgh with several teammates dispersed across the United States. While we have a physical office, we also collaborate remotely. We require interns to be in the office three days a week with some flexibility, and we expect all team members to be available during core working hours (10 a.m. – 3 p.m.) in Eastern Standard Time. Occasionally, we attend meetings during non-standard hours to stay connected with the Studio Blue APAC team based in Shanghai. This team provides design consulting services to Eaton teams across the Asia Pacific region.

The design thinking team is highly collaborative with lots of opportunity to work with other design disciplines, and we are always iterating on and improving our strategy and processes.
