Job Description

Start Rate (Non-negotiable): $37.42 per hour

Contract/Temporary Assignment up to 13 months

Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. In Engineering and Asset Management, we play a key role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and cost-effective service of our transit system as the Metrolinx engineering technical authority and owner of more than $20 Billion in assets and growing to $60 Billion by 2030.

Our E&AM Signals & Communications Projects office is looking for a Junior Project Coordinator for a contract up to 13 months to work closely with our Project Coordinators and Project Managers, assisting them with day-to-day activities through various stages of signalling project design, construction, testing, and commissioning in support of new and ongoing Regional Express Rail Projects and State of Good Repair (SOGR).

In this role you may support the following work: network wide roll out of at-grade crossing enhancements and upgrades, provision of a new GO Transit Train Control System, expansion, and modification for electrification of the existing conventional signalling systems on each of the Rail Corridors, Communication Based Train Control, and Engineering and Asset Management.

What will I be doing?

  • Coordinating projects through all stages of design and construction in terms of function, quality, budget, schedule, and approvals in co-ordination with external and internal authorities.
  • Administering consulting agreements and construction contracts for the maintenance, rehabilitation, and expansion of Metrolinx facilities.
  • Identifying and recommending physical infrastructure projects with respect to rehabilitation of all Metrolinx facilities and coordinating the implementation of approved projects
  • Forecasts, monitors, and reports all capital project expenditures such as consultant fees, purchase orders, construction contracts and change orders
  • Coordinate engineering consultant services for the preliminary design and execution of infrastructure projects for new construction and upgrades to Railway, Stations, Track and Signal infrastructure and to ensure compliance with GO Transit standards and policies, Regulated Railway Standards, Transport Canada regulations and guidelines, AREMA practices, the Railway Safety Act and internal and external stakeholder requirements.
  • Prepares, coordinates, and submits tender document specifications for construction and consultant contracts for submission to Procurement and Contract Services for tendering.
  • Ensures proper acceptance and commissioning of completed projects for hand over to the user group.
  • Prepares performance evaluations for consultants and contractors and prepares project post-evaluation reports including project cost analyses.
  • Research and participate in the development of industry construction and design standards, procedures, and best practices to ensure continuous improved services, physical infrastructure, and safety.


What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?

  • Community college diploma in Civil/Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology or Computer Science, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience providing a thorough knowledge of the theories and practices of engineering.
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience related to the design and construction of transit signalling, interpreting, and applying contract plans and specifications and co-ordinating contracted engineering projects.
  • Good knowledge of project management, including cost control, scheduling, codes, standards, specifications, corporate policies and procedures, and applicable contract legislation with an understanding of Railway Rules and Regulations and Safety & Operating procedures. Proficiency in CAD will be an asset
  • Good written and oral communication skills, ability to work independently, strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, and analytical ability.
  • Proficiency in the use of project management software and computer applications.
  • Must have a valid Ontario “G” Driver’s Licence and successfully complete environmental, safety and any other training and certification required by corporate policy.
