General Description

The Innovation Intern will assist in driving achievement of our innovation and sustainability targets by performing research work on critical innovation and sustainability subjects. The Innovation intern will have the chance to gain industry experience in circular economy. This internship will be in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in support of NREL and National Science Foundation (NSF) SOLAR Program (Securing critical material supply chains by enabling phOtovoltaic circuLARity (SOLAR). This is a paid internship that will start on or around June 3, 2024, with an end date of August 9, 2024, providing an immersive experience in renewable energy research.

What the candidate can expect:

  • Work on a defined research project related to NREL's Solar PV recycling research.
  • Collaborate with a world-class team of renewable energy experts from NREL and receive guidance and oversight from EDPR NA.
  • Gain subject matter expertise in the field of circular economy, specifically within the context of renewable energy.
  • Have opportunities to present findings and insights to top management.
  • Contribute to accelerating the energy transformation through innovative research and development efforts.


Main accountabilities:

  • Perform a circular economy research project, focusing on tasks related to NREL's Solar PV recycling research.
  • Prepare a thesis paper, blueprint, and/or presentation to share conclusions and insights derived from the research work.
  • Support the US innovation hub in day-to-day tasks and requests related to renewable energy initiatives.
  • Additional Tasks May Include:
    • Identifying recyclers' capacities and technologies accepted
    • Assessing the purity and economic value of end materials
    • Analyzing state regulations impacting PV recycling and policy implications
    • Supporting NREL's agent-based modeling and geospatial analysis to optimize recycling center locations.
    • Contributing to NREL's working groups on circularity topics involving industrial partners


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate (Junior or Senior), graduate, or PHD student at an accredited college or university; excellent academic records
  • Previous circular economy expertise is a plus
  • Majoring in a STEM subject is a plus
  • Strong interest in renewable energy
  • Prior research experience is a plus and/or strong analytical skills and ability to conduct analytical research
  • Knowledge of PV technologies, energy systems, and the PV supply chain is a plus
  • Ability to use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, E-mail to effectively communicate with others
  • Ability to use Python is a plus
  • Understanding of Microsoft products and/or complementing products preferred.
  • Competency in Analytical Problem Solving, Strong Communication, Customer/Partner Relationships, and Technology Expertise preferred

Physical demands & working conditions:

  • Sitting/Standing/Flexibility: Ability to stand and sit for 8 or more hours when in an office environment;
  • Speech/Reading: Ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently and deliver a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form;
  • Lifting: Ability to lift items weighing up to 10 pounds;
  • Vision/Hearing: Ability to understand a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form;
  • Safety: Ability to understand and communicate safety precautions when necessary.
