Empa's Electron Microscopy Center invites applications for a

Doctoral student in transmission electron microscopy studies of ferroelectric multilayers

Empa's Electron Microscopy Center located in Dübendorf conducts forefront research in the development and application of new electron microscopy techniques in materials science and is offering a PhD position to carry out cutting-edge research in the field of ferroelectrics.

The aim of this project is to investigate engineered polarization discontinuities in ferroelectric heterostructures by probing them at atomic resolution. For this purpose advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques (e.g. aberration-corrected STEM, STEM-DPC, 4D-STEM, EELS and EDX) will be used. A substantial part of this position involves the development and/or implementation of new image analysis methods. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Laboratory for Multifunctional Ferroic Materials at ETH Zürich, Prof. Dr. Morgan Trassin. The PhD student will be enrolled at ETH Zürich in the Department of Materials.

We are looking for a highly motivated student with a strong analytical background holding a Master's degree in physics, materials science or a related discipline. Professional command of English (both written and spoken) is mandatory. The successful candidate shows enthusiasm for conducting original research and strives for scientific excellence. Prior exposure to transmission electron microscopy, image analysis, machine learning and/or programming (e.g. Matlab, Python) is highly desirable.

We offer internationally competitive conditions, optimal experimental and computational facilities, and the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary environment where communication and interaction to create synergies and develop novel ideas are highly valued. This full-time position will be available as of February 2023 or upon agreement. The planned project duration is four years.

For further information about the position please contact Prof Dr Rolf Erni rolf.erni@empa.ch or Dr Marta D. Rossell marta.rossell@empa.ch and visit our websites www.empa.ch/web/s299 and Empa-Video

We look forward to receiving your online application including a letter of motivation, CV, diplomas with transcripts and contact details of three referees. Please upload the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered.
