Your mission:


Radio sensing systems, envisioned as integral part of 6G and future WLAN, estimate presence and location of a non-cooperative user by measuring the location-dependent impact of the user on the propagation of radio signals. A prominent example of such systems is device-free localization, which relies on user-induced power changes in the received line-of-sight signals within wireless networks. User-induced fading, however, can be also observed in the received power of reflected and scattered signals, i.e., multipath components (MPCs), which we can additionally include MPCs to device-free localization systems enhancing both coverage and accuracy. Thus, precise knowledge of the propagation paths of the considered MPCs is crucial to these multipath-enhanced device-free localization systems. These paths can be clearly identified in radio attenuation maps, which represent user-induced location-dependent attenuations, such as in the figure above. Using novel methods based on AI, we want to classify the reflection order, i.e., the number of subsequent reflection points, and ultimately to estimate the exact courses of the propagation paths from these radio attenuation maps.


As working student, you will support in the realization of AI-based classification and estimation of reflection points of multipath components. Specifically, you will contribute to the design and implementation of the corresponding neural networks and the creation of labeled sets of synthetic and measured data for training.


In addition, you will have the opportunity to participate in the preparation and execution of measurement campaigns featuring cutting-edge WiFi-sensing technology.


Possibility to extend the position as a working student to a bachelor/master thesis.


Your qualifications:


  • Experiences in software programming (Python, C++, and MATLAB or similar)
  • Experiences in theory and design of artificial neural networks are a plus
  • Independent work and good English or German language skills
